This multiple use trail is actually an old railroad bed that winds alongside the Missouri River. The terrain is mostly gravel with a handful of water crossings but can get very muddy after a heavy rain or during spring thaw. The area is open year-round but the best time to visit is during the summer and fall months.
The main trailhead is located at the Fort Rice Campground, which has ten campsites, each with electric and water hookups. Other amenities include a boat ramp and fish cleaning station. There is no fee charged to ride the trail but all machines must have a current North Dakota Trail Access Permit.
