Other Names | Mescal Mountains OHV Area, Gila River Valley, Steam Boat Wash, Steamboat Wash, Windy Hill |
Last Known Status | Open |
This OHV area offers miles of trails that range from easy to difficult. Wide and rocky trails with some sharp inclines and a couple of riverbed washes make up most of the terrain.
There are very few actual dirt bike trails here and the loops are generally short, rugged 4x4 roads but the scenery is top notch.
The staging area is very pleasant and has twelve campsites, each with a shade ramada, fire ring and picnic table. Camping is free and is available on a first come, first serve basis. Other amenities include restrooms, potable water and loading ramps.

This is a typical piece of trail here. No dirt bike trails, but rather some short scenic 4x4 loops.
The trails do run through some canyons and washes which are very scenic.
Some trails like this one get rougher and rockier until they eventually come to a dead end.
The main staging area and campground offers great views, a pleasant desert setting, and some nice amenities.
Each campsite has a shade ramada, picnic table, fire grill and garbage can. Camping is free but is limited to two weeks.
One of the few steep sections. Nothing too difficult but the loose rock can make it a bit more challenging.
The scenery is top notch. Lots of beautiful cactuses and mountain views.
Another view of one of the trail loops. Most of the routes have light elevation changes.
A nice overall view of the area. Vegetation is sparse but mainly consists of saguaro, cholla, prickly pear cactuses and scrub brush.
Another view of the trail. This is the place to go if you want to get away from the crowds.
This is the main trail leading from the campground. Most of the trails are surrounded by various cactuses and scrub brush.
