No doubt, Massachusetts has some decent offroad trails. From the technical rock crawls of October Mountain State Forest to the narrow twisty single track at Hodges Village Dam, there is truly something for every taste. But regardless of where you are coming from, to ride in Massachusetts, you'll need an offroad sticker.
Unlike many states, Massachusetts does not reciprocate. Simply put, even if you are currently registered in your home state, out of state registrations are not honored (this includes street legal dual sport motorcycles). Both residents and non-residents alike need to get the sticker which can be obtained by visiting one of the Environmental Police Registration Offices or by mailing the registration form with the appropriate paperwork and fees.
First, complete the registration application, and make sure you bring the title, proof of paid sales tax (bill of sale), check/money order or credit card (cash not accepted). Proof of insurance is not required, and you don't have to bring your ATV or dirt bike with you. First time registrants do need to visit in person, however, but you can renew by mail or online.
After completing the paperwork and paying the fee, you will get two stickers to attach to the left and right side of the bike, plus a registration card that must be carried with you while riding (rangers do check).
Remember, you need the sticker if you want to ride the designated motorized trails on state managed or public land and private motocross tracks!
Cost as of January 2024 is $33/non-resident (1 year sticker) or $44/resident (2 year sticker).
All offices are open Monday through Friday from 9am to 5pm, but always call to verify, especially before a holiday weekend.
